The Market Intelligence & Strategy Manager - Upstream Paper is part of the Cycles & Procurement team based in Amsterdam, reporting to the Global Paper Packaging Manager. To support Danone’s Strategy, your role will have a wide scope encompassing different areas of the packaging category including building market intelligence, risk management strategies, and sourcing strategies for upstream paper.

You will work in close collaboration with the full Packaging Team globally. Your strategies and contributions will be essential in optimizing the management of a spend of over 500M EUR.

 

About the Job

 

You will be subject matter expert for paper markets globally and across all business divisions. The key focus is on optimizing risk and spend management, co-building and executing strategies for upstream paper sourcing, as well as contributing to productivity projects.

 

Market research and intelligence

  • Build a comprehensive mapping of the end-to-end physical value chain of paper and its ecosystem. This may require selecting and engaging third party consultants.
  • Continuously deepen understanding of commodity exposures and market fundamentals, to comprehend both short and long term market trends and developments.
  • Translate market knowledge and analytics into monthly commodity reports and price forecasts.
  • Work in close collaboration with the procurement and finance teams globally, to support the rolling forecast process.

Risk and Spend Management :

  • Establish a diagnosis of the performance of current pricing mechanisms and risk management policies.
  • Based on thorough volatility and value-at-risk analysis, design revised risk policies.
  • Actively monitor trends in active markets and ensure quick response to changes or new opportunities.
  • Elaborate and share coverage recommendations to all main regions.
  • Develop cross-region scorecards to track market risks and opportunities across exposures.
  • Develop tools and metrics to analyze hedging activity impacts globally and share performance reports across the business
  • Support rolling forecast process in conjunction with the global and regional procurement and finance teams, including analysis of exposures, inflation, risk and PPV.

Sourcing strategy

  • Assess the benefits of direct sourcing for upstream paper (tier 2 suppliers).
  • In collaboration with category buyers, define sourcing strategies for upstream paper, including the design of should-cost-models, identification of suppliers, go-to-market strategy and participation to negotiations.
  • Assess import/export opportunities for upstream sourcing.

Project Management:

  • Participates on projects linked to the respective commodity area. This may include the testing of digital tools and dashboards, or supporting process improvement initiatives by bringing inputs linked to the commodity.

About you

To be successful in this role you need to have:

 

  • At least 6 years of experience in  procurement and supply chain, commodity management or market research, preferably related to commodities, paper or packaging.
  • You have proven leadership capabilities, a ‘can-do’ attitude, have outstanding analytical skills, and are able influence and engage your stakeholders.
  • You previous experience was in analyzing/buying/trading packaging commodities (preferably paper) on a regional or/and global level You have experience in interacting with the suppliers negotiating and diverse  stakeholders.
  • As this role foresees a close interaction with the key suppliers as well as multiple internal stakeholders across the globe you need to have solid presentation and negotiation skills, excellent stakeholder management skills and are highly disciplined.
